.. First, there was the pet food recall scare of 2007. Now it’s the recession. Although these are good enough reasons why more and more dog owners are making their own dog food, there are many other reasons to start making your own dog food. Most commercial dog food has dubious ingredients such as coloring, additives, preservatives, and artificial flavoring agents. Commercial dog food may contain the carcasses of diseased animals.
In her book The Nontoxic Home and Office: Protecting Yourself and Your Family form Everyday Toxins and Hazards, author Deborah Lynn Dadd wrote: “Each year about 116,000 mammals and nearly 15 million birds are condemned before slaughter. After killing, another 325,000 carcasses are discarded and more than 5.5 million major parts are cut away because they are determined to be diseased. Shockingly, 140,000 tons of poultry is condemned annually, mainly from cancer. The diseased animals that cannot be sold are processed into animal feed.”
No wonder so much of the pet food you buy at the supermarket has that awful smell. Worst of all, the FDA approves the use of diseased animals for the production of animal feed and pet food!
The solution to this mess is to make your own homemade dog food. When it comes down to it, it really isn’t that hard. For many years the pet food industry has made us believe that only the food they produce was good for our animals. Don’t believe them!
The truth is that dogs have been man’s bet friend for the past 10,000 years and for generations, they have done just fine with the scraps and other foods that their human friends gave them. You are very capable of producing healthy dog food right in your own kitchen and all the while saving yourself a ton of money.
Where do your start? There is lots of help out there if you dare to look. In his book The Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats. Dr Richard Pitcairn has many suggestions for feeding your dog homemade food containing all natural ingredients. This book is an excellent reference if you are starting on the natural path to your dog’s health.
