How To Groom a Dog

Woman bathing her dogJust as we dog parents keep ourselves clean and showered, keeping our dogs clean and well groomed is just as important. Grooming not only gets rid of dirt and smells but it also helps the dog’s skin. Grooming is a very important aspect in your dog care. Here are some grooming tips for your dog.

  • Regular brushing. This is recommended for both long hair and short haired breeds although it is more important for dogs with long hair. In fact some breeds need daily brushing in order to stay health and beautiful.
  • Bathing. Normally a dog should be bathed once a month. Be sure to use a natural soap designed for dogs. Use warm water if possible unless it is a summer day and you are washing her outdoors with the hose. When washing your dog, make sure you do not get any soap on the dog’s face or nose. Just wash the face with water. Try no to get any water in the dog’s ears either.
  • Drying - The best way to dry your dog is outdoors provided the weather is warm. In the winter, using a warm blow drier is OK.
  • Fleas – A good flea shampoo will take care of that but there are other precautions you must consider. Read the article on flea control.
  • Ticks - If you see any ticks, learn how to remove a tick here.

If your dog needs further care, seek the help of a professional. Some dogs need regular clipping for either health reasons or beauty (such as a poodle). A dog grooming professional will always add to your dog grooming routine.
